Listening to the Vibes...Van Morrison, please come home.

Incredible information! Evidently, Van Morrison's music is being pulled from YouTube. These facists are surely warring. Who?

I'm trying to speak softly, but I'm angry. When trying to find some Van Morrison stuff sung by the artist himself, I opened a website. It explained that Warner Brothers has pressured YouTube into removing Morrison's material. Other recording artists are being removed, too, such as The Rolling Stones.

I found Van Morrison's, "Moondance", original on an FM Radio site. I cannot bring it over here, but here is the http:

  1. I hadn't been here because for some reason I thought you weren't posting...where did I get that silly idea?
Too bad about Van Morrisons music on YouTube...I find that happening more and more as I try to share my tastes with others through blogging.
LAWYERS! I read an interview with Van Morrison earlier this year in Q...the music magazine and he seems to be among those who belive he is protecting his legacy and income by controlling the access to his music.
In a sense, this my be true, but on the other hand, the world has undeniably changed. I had the experience recently of trying to share a video of a movie made by the film maker, John Waters in 1969 recently... a bad version was up on YouTube for less than 24 hours before his lawyers pulled it...
It was so obscure...I heard that he had it available on a collection DVD that you have to be a fanatic to even know about!
It is being proven daily that authors, musicians and artists who let their work be accessed freely end up selling more and making money in this new world...how are we supposed to know about stuff if it can't be freely shared and viewed..Interestingly enough, Mick Jagger in a recent interview came down on the sign of artistic freedom on the internet...
He said that there was a short period in the 70's through the 90's when money was made by big artists...before ...most musicians were ripped off by the record companies and their management...now, the world has changed...
Just because you record a record, that doesn't mean you are entitled...
The fight over rights and copyrights...who owns what and how information and images can be used and appropriated is only beginning...
A good example is the estate of Roy Liechtenstein, the American pop artist who made a career of recycling cultural imagery in his art...
recently, a group used an image that he used in a painting for record cover art...
The estate challenged the musicians in court and finally, the musicians won...the estate dropped the charges.

  2. Ha!

Remember the good ol' days and black labels? That's what local head shops called the illegal, non-copyrighted LPs they sold.

  3. Ann,

    About Van Morrison...

He wrote some decent pop/rock music. Since your nickname is Moonlitetwine, you must have heard his "Moon dance" song, which was probably the most popular tune he ever wrote/composed.

However, even in that tune, he proved he couldn't sing for shit. I found his voice texture extremely unappealing, and while this is of course a matter of taste and other ppl may find it great, his main problem is that he couldn't sing in fucking tune.

This "Moon dance" song is a shining example of it. He is all over the fucking place except in pitch.

Now, with perhaps the exception of "rap" music where the dudes/dudettes don't even "attempt" to "sing", singing out of tune is the worst sin you can commit as a singer.

He should have accepted his limitations as a performer and written decent music - but have it performed by more talented musicians. Others, such as the incredibly talented writer/composer/arranger Quincy Jones had more sense and less ego, and that's exactly what he did.

QJ didn't make a fool out of himself trying to sing the Michael Jackson songs (which he wrote/arranged/produced - ALL of them): instead he was content to be the genius behind the scene while the populace went ape over Michael Jackson singing QJ's masterpieces.

Love ya, talk to you tomorrow as usual :-)
