ICTU Protest March

I attended the Irish Congress of Trades Unions march in Waterford today along with an estimated 9,000 other people. Joe Ryan of Cllr Joe Ryan's Blog was also in attendance so check his blog for more photos and a full report written from a trade union perspective.

There were marches in various towns and cities all over Ireland and they were all well attended, but somehow I think it will take more sustained action to scare the fat cats in our government.

Anyway, some photos (click on any image to enlarge)...

Teachers with placards in Irish, fair play!

Wexford Community Development Project protesters, (looking good Pauline)! You can see a little movie, with sound of them protesting on Joe's blog.

Young people from Ballybeg, Waterford waiting to join the march.

Anyway, again we were blessed with good weather and an enjoyable day was had by all.

  1. Delighted to have met up with you in Waterford. By all accounts it won't be too long before we all meet up again! I've uploaded a video of the 1st speaker at the rally at menapia1 on youtube, unfortunatley the batteries in the camera ran out half way through!

    Regards

    Joe

  2. I cannot believe the government would try to cut a teacher's pension. In Iowa, teachers work with limited resources from their districts as it is. A lot of teachers dip into their own pockets in order to teach as they feel they should. Really, to take away any amount of a teacher's retirement would be a big slap in the face. Also, finding new teachers would be pretty hard to do if that happened here.

    Augh!!! That is just horrible.

  3. Somehow I suspect that public servants will be bled dry. It is now open season on the public service. The demonization of the public service has in some cases verged on incitement to hatred.

  4. John,

It is important that the public sector, the private sector, those on pensions and social welfare all unite together to oppose the cuts.

The government is basically using a tactic of divide and conquer,
